Fossil fuel combustion is the most common means of powering industrial plants and processes. While these fuels are recognized as an important strategic resource for Canada, there is a growing need to improve their environmental performance and reduce the emissions of criteria air contaminants (e.g., SO2, NOx, particulate matter), toxic substances (e.g., mercury), and greenhouse gases (e.g., CO2) associated with their use.
Scientists at CanmetENERGY are leading the research and development of a diverse set of innovative technologies that will make fossil fuel combustion cleaner and contribute to the sustainable use of this resource.
Working in a variety of research areas, we strive to make power generation more efficient and environmentally sustainable by reducing harmful emissions. Through the development of carbon capture and storage technologies, CO2 can be captured and permanently stored underground, thereby removing its harmful effects on our environment. By researching combustion processes such as clean coal technologies, gasification, oxy-fuel combustion, fuel and emission assessment, pollution control systems, and combustion system optimization, we are making current combustion processes more efficient while reducing their hazardous emissions.
Faced with increasing concerns over climate change and environmental sustainability, the cutting-edge clean energy technologies being developed at CanmetENERGY will allow Canada to take on a leading role in protecting the environment while maintaining its economic competitiveness.
