Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies represent a unique opportunity for Canada to reduce the transportation sector’s environmental footprint. As an emerging industry, there is still work to be done to commercialize these technologies and a key step in this process is demonstration and deployment.
CanmetENERGY demonstrates and evaluates fuelling options for a variety of on-road and off-road hydrogen-fuelled vehicles. Projects are developed and managed through cost-shared agreements and partnerships with industry, academia, provincial/territorial governments and other federal bodies. Activities build on the achievements of the Canadian Transportation and Fuel Cell Alliance (CTFCA). The CTFCA was a seven year program that developed and demonstrated hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and fuelling stations in real-world conditions across Canada. A number of CTFCA achievements are highlighted in the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Timeline.
The Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY Technology Initiative
is now investing $8.8 million in the following 10 projects, which we manage in close collaboration with an external Working Group:
Hydrogen Highway*, British Columbia
Vancouver Fuel Cell Vehicle Program*, British Columbia
Pacific Spirit Hydrogen Fuelling Station, British Columbia
Airports Project, British Columbia and Quebec
Victoria Hydrogen Fuelling Station, British Columbia
Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project, British Columbia
Saskatchewan Hydrogen Highway, Saskatchewan
Hydrogen Village*, Ontario
*These projects are managed by the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association. More information can be found at Powering Now - H2i
